State Championship participating in Backpacks for Kids Program
FIRST is Michigan is pleased to announce that the State Championship will be participating in the "Backpacks for Kids" food drive program run by Food Gatherers of Washtenaw county. We hope to gather the most number of backpacks Foodgatherers has ever collected.
A description of the program follows.
The Need:
School Administrators noticed that elementary ages children had a hard time learning on Mondays. They discovered this is because they were hungry from having little or no food all weekend long.
The Fix:
The fix is called "Backpacks for Kids." The concept is brilliant and really simple:
Every Friday, the students get backpacks (sized appropriately for elementary aged children) filled with food. Throughout the weekend, the students eat the food and on Monday the backpack is returned to school. The school replenishes the food in the backpack and on Friday the student picks it up again to take home. This cycle is repeated throughout the school year.
We are asking that every team bring at least one backpack filled with the food from the approved list below. With 64 teams, this should mean 64 backpacks. I am hoping many of you will bring more. You might check the dollar stores for the small backpacks.
Here is a list of acceptable foods (no glass containers of any kind please):
pop top canned fruit
juice boxes
variety packs of cereal
boxes of individually wrapped oatmeal
granola bars
peanut butter in plastic containers
non refrigerated pudding cups
pop top cans of soup, ravioli, spaghetti
boxes of macaroni and cheese

I hope to have a heap of backpacks so large they need heavy machinery to move them out!!!
